Spilling when you eat is the result of one of two things in my opinion: either you eat like a pig (which doesn't seem likely) or you're too intelligent for your own good. Smart people also write badly, amongst other things, since they're never really 100% concentrated on what they're doing: the brain is off dreaming and imagining and thinking about world peace and so on, rather than straining itself to operate the correct hand-to-mouth muscles.
It's a nicer excuse, anyway. :)
