Oh what I wouldn't do to go on a car ride... a long long car ride. We are landlocked here in SE Alaska. Can't drive but 42 miles one way and 42 miles back :(

I often forget how lucky we are in California for our vistas - I can take a Saturday afternoon and go 300 miles of amazing views and roads, then back again - all in the same day if I wanted. Just in this state I can go almost 1000 miles before I hit Oregon.

How 'bout the Crystal Park Casino and Hotel?. But ya have to drive surface streets through Compton to get there (that'll add excitement to the trip). By the way...not joinin' ya for that trip, sorry!

Mike, don't listen to routeguy. You are not allowed to go to Compton.

Little Saigon in Westminister. For a real adventure, wear a t-shirt emblazoned with the image of Ho Chi Minh.

Tecate, Mexico. Heck, all of Mexico is an adventure once you get past the tourist towns along the border.

Anywhere in the company of Kirial.

Southern Utah. Start at Zion and just keep heading East until you hit the Colorado Border. Best done in October.

Channel Islands National Park.

The Mojave Desert (after November).

There's a youth hostel (http://63.70.211.212/cfdocs/hostels.cfm?CITY=Santa%20Cruz) in santa cruz that is a cheap place to stay.

Or there's always the Hotel Royal(e)... the place that exemplifies the "you can checkout anytime you like, but you can never leave" line from hotel california :)
