some shorts

Some general nonsense:

I'm currently listening to Willie Nelson's version of "Over The Rainbow". I didn't know such a thing existed until I caught the last 3 minutes of an episode of Taxicab Confessions tonight. It's actually a pretty good version.

Check out the discussion over on AtheistWeb - current topics include posting the Ten Commandments in public places and Laci Peterson's spokeswoman praising God and vowing revenge in the same breath.

I'm about to change status from a temporary employee to a permanent one, with a 33% increase in hours (to 40/week) and a pay raise. I'm very excited.

My lady and I both have Jury Summons for dates in the next two weeks. Some notes about that:

  • I'm leaving to go camping the day I'm supposed to call in, so I hope I don't forget all weekend.
  • My lady likes to knit when she's bored/not doing anything else/has to wait. Alas, the Summons is very specific about not allowing knitting needles in the building. Silly, methinks, as they don't ban pencils.
  • While I'm very excited at the prospect at serving my civic duty for the first time (I was called but didn't serve in 1998), I'm pretty sure my company doesn't pay for jury duty, meaning I'll likely make $15 a day instead of my new permanent payrate, as well as likely missing time when I'm supposed to be there full time for the first time.
  • I work about 4 minutes from the main county offices and courthouse in downtown Santa Ana. Of course, I'm getting jury duty on the other side of the county in Westminster.
  • The back of my summons says "The temperature of the jury assembly areas and courtrooms can be unpredictable. Jurors are encouraged to dress accordingly". How does one do that, exactly?

Lots of nonsense lately about Rick Santorum and his recent comments about gay sex. I'll expand my thoughts on that in coming entries, but let me say that you're free to say what you want, but realize when you do, and someone is listening, you have to assume the world may hear it. And thanks to the internet (in what I consider one of it's greatest features), if one person hears it, the whole world may literally hear it.

My Charity Dinner and birthday party went well. Not a huge turnout, but we've raised just about $500 for Second Harvest Food Bank. There's still time to donate. Help someone out today. It feels good.

I got my new Wil shirt on Friday - it's awesome. Wil also sent stickers. What a class guy!

Wow, days without a post, then this. When it rains, it pours...

    yikes...

I don't think I'd eat this even if I did eat meat, or a meatless version of it was produced. Yikes.

    yikes, been a while, again

Well, it looks like I've gone a while without a post, again. Have no fear, loyal readers, I'm just in a slow period in posting. The next few weeks are damned busy - the Birthday Charity Dinner is Saturday (there's still time to come! If I know you, email me for more information), next weekend is a group camping trip, and the weekend after that is a quick trip to Santa Cruz to see friends and see friends do Rocky Horror (the show I used to direct/produce). Should be fun, but busy busy busy.

In other news, check out AtheistWeb if you haven't already. The more readers we get, the more comments that get posted, and the better a community it becomes.

Haven't had much time lately to comment on things like war (sucks), Tim Robbins (hero) or religion (still not my bag), though there's no particular reason why not - just haven't been posting. I have things to say, really.

Remember, dissent is American - don't let anyone tell you that "now is not the time to say things like that" or "we have to support ______, the country is currently _______". We all have the right and responsibility to speak out, engage in debate, learn all we can, and use our rights to defend our rights.

    earth day

Oh, in case you're wondering, the song is called "What Are We Gonna Do" and it's by Dramarama. The first line reads "It's April 21st, and everybody knows today is Earth Day. Merry Christmas, Happy Birthday to whoever's being born".

    Happy Earth Day tomorrow.

    april 17

Just wanted to share with the world that I had a really good birthday:

  • Had a good day at work (researching some baseball info, among other things).
  • Met up with my lady for dinner at Macaroni Grill.
  • Met a bunch of friends at Red Robin for libations and celebrations.
  • Spent some quality time with my lady.
  • Won $50 gambling online.

And in a weird twist of fate, one of the toothbrushes I got for my birthday last year (from April and the Dentons, I believe) and had been recently been using (opened it up about 4 months ago) snapped in half as I was rincing it off, as if it knew that it was no longer good because it was past my birthday, and it was a Birthday Toothbrush, damnit. It was time for a new one anyway.

In case you missed it yesterday, I linked to an "on this day" page, the homepage for my upcoming Birhtday Charity Dinner (check it out!), my Amazon.com wishlist, and the form to donate to Second Harvest Food Bank, this year's highlighted charity at the Birhtday Charity Dinner. If I know you and you'd like to come, check out the party, and if I don't know you, or you can't come, feel free to donate to Second Harvest Food Bank and spread the love. It should be a great event, and for a great cause.

    happy tax day!

Hey there folks, and happy tax day. I'm not too worried, as I did mine 6 weeks ago and am now just waiting for a check. It helps when you know you're getting money back. My advice - go to a tax professional. There's all sorts of legal things you can do that will get you loads of deductions, and many you won't know about without a pro doing it with you. Ask around, it's more likely than not that someone you know knows a good one. They're well worth the money.

In other news, I'm going to be at my local Atheist Meetup today (4-15-03). If you're similarly minded, feel free to join us. This is my first, I hope it's interesting and a good time.

In still other news, I'm going out for drinks and dinner tomorrow. Here's a hint as to why.

    getting smart on flags

More flag news: Display of U.S. Flag Barred After Unfurling on Statue.

Finally. The US military has kept saying "we're liberating, not occupying", then they've been planting the US flag on statues and palaces throughout Iraq. Yes, it's pride for them, but it's also an international sign for "we now rule your country". They've done the smart thing to stop flying it over Iraq.

Flag Update! The flag that was draped over the head of Saddam's statue just happened to be the same flag that was flown over the Pentagon on September 11. US gov't says "coincidence". I find that hard to believe.

    all those flags

A quick question, loyal readers: where do you think the Iraqi people are getting all those American flags they're waving around?

    been a while

Wow, it's been a long time since I've posted. There's no particularly good reason for that, I've been working but still have had the time to work on personal projects. I'll spread some quickies cheer:

  • War sucks. Now that it's appearing to wind down, however, we can hope for few if any more causalities on both sides and getting the Iraqi people the things they need to live.

  • Anil pointed me to the liberal celebrity blacklist, an appearently serious site listing celebrities you shouldn't support because they have "leftist" and "anti-American" ideas. I tend to agree with their "anti-American" ideals, of course. The concept of labeling those you disagree with as "anti-American", then hiding behind patriotism to support your position is rather disgusting, but par for the course lately. We're all free to speak out, have opinions, and boycott who we please. But making them out to be un-American because they don't agree 100% with the government is doing? That is what makes them good Americans.

  • Visit AtheistWeb.com. There's been some good discussion there lately, and we're always looking for more.

  • I got a religious flier on my windshield (always the best way to spread The Word, as liter on my car), but I'm unsure what group it is. Do you know?

  • Remember, Chris Stankevitz and I both post here. The majority of posts are mine, however, you might think to yourself "boy, Mike's really changed his opinions here". Check the name with each post. As soon as Chris writes one, I'll post a small biography of each of us here.

  • Goth chicks rule. Just thought I'd share that. Thanks for reading! Leave a note!

The US killed "Chemical Ali" on Saturday by dropping a bomb on his house. I (Chris Stankevitz) have never felt a stronger sense of pride for the US than I do now. The man gassed 5,000 of his own coutrymen on March 16, 1988. (He killed 100,000 all together.) He also killed some of his family members including his son in law.

What a wonderful gift we have given the world (especially the Iraqis) by killing this man! Let this serve as a message to the world that we will not sit idly while genocide takes place! (*)

(*) Pending next presidential election outcome

Sure seems like there's been a lot of this kinda stuff going on lately.

    hre153

Regarding the text of H Res 153 (Encouraging a day of prayer and fasting in order to secure the blessings of God in our current wars), I think I can honestly say that much of the United States is governed and represented by ignorant, sky-god worshiping, superstitious fools who twist the constitution to somehow mean "Believe in the Christian God!". Some of the house record on H Res 153:

I pray that the loss of life would be diminished as much as possible and that people who are fighting from the United States as well as those from other countries and other nations would have the power of an Almighty supreme force invoked...

That actually, though, if we think about it logically, is very consistent with the very purpose and cause of what America has always been about. If we really think about what is it that is the glue that defines America, what holds us together as a people, it is that belief that there is a God...So we do not believe that that is just an American right, but that is something that is for all people everywhere, and it is that belief that has propelled our soldiers onto the battlefield...

And to think we're not at war with Islam, we're not a Christian nation, and we're not trying to be the great global mission to the world. This makes me sick as an atheist, and it makes me sick as an American.

(Search and read the bill and it's discussion here.)

    Happy April Fools day!

Wow. Long time without a post from me. Here's some quickies:

  • Happy April Fool's Day!
  • The US House of Representatives passed a resolution last week encouraging a national day of prayer and fasting. Read about it here and discuss it over at AtheistWeb.
  • The planning for The Michael Doss Second Annual Birthday Charity Dinner is in full swing! If I know you, and you'd like to come, drop me a line.
  • Who are you? What are you doing here? I get hundreds of hits from people all over the world, yet most just read and leave. How about a comment? It'll make me happy.
  • War still sucks. As soon as I'm up to it, I'll get around to writing further on the topics of "With us or against us - who are you kidding?" "Is anti-war anti-American" and "Why would I give up the free speech our troops are theoretically fighting for now that we're bombing the stuffing out of Iraq?".
  • Have a great day!
