In all the hub-bub of

In all the hub-bub of George Harrison's death, it might pass by the wayside that John Knowles, author of "A Seperate Peace" died today in Florida. Reminds me something else I just read - CS Lewis and Aldeus Huxley both died the same day in 1963, but no one took notice - it was the same day JFK was killed.

Oh dear god...a company called Goldin (maker of fine pickle products) now sells pickle juice in a bottle. Check out theBevNET.com review. I'm a big fan of pickles for both their taste and their kitch value and humor, but this is going too far. I'm reminded of a friend of mine who was dared to drink a jar of pickle juice, and did. He then vomited.

One well moderated /. post

One well moderated /. post and the traffic spikes. Nothing wrong with that...

Once again, I'm working on less than 5 hours of sleep - I used to do this in high school, but I'm not sure how. Not tired yet, but we'll see as the day develops. Hopefully It'll be a fun, exciting friday, and I'll keep busy enough to avoid nature's lagmonster.

Leave notes - the discussion has been strangly quiet since I put the comment system back in place.

Why is it I always come up with neat web projects to undertake at 2 AM, then realize I should get to bed if I hope to wake at a decent hour, then am uninspired to work on said projects the next morning, when I really have little else to do?

It's deliciously cold outside tonight. It seems like we havn't had a bittingly cold evening in months (in all honesty, it's probably been 9 or 10 months). The coldest it gets here (in southern California) is right around 30 degrees F, and that's late at night in late December. It's about 40 outside now, perfect for a clear evening.

I'm dumb. The reason no one's been commenting on my site is because they can't...reblogger, the system I've been using for comments, is down, just as blogvoices, the system I was using before, went down. I need to find a comments system that runs on my own server.

For everything I don't have

For everything I don't have in life, for everything I'm missing, and for all the misfortune I've ever had, I still live a wonderful life, with wonderful people. I'm well fed, I've never gone to bed hungry. I've gone through fear (especially in the last 2 months), but some people face much worse every day. I have the ability, intelligence and potential to do more than most people in this world. I'm lucky.

If you're reading this, you're lucky. You have a computer, you likely don't go to bed hungry, and you likely live in a neighborhood where you don't worry about leaving the house. You likely have the freedom to choose what you believe, and to write what you want. You'll likely live longer than your parents, and you'll likely have a higher quality of life. In this month of Thanksgiving, be glad for what you have, because it's also likely you didn't think of these things today.

This is amazingly frightening: An

This is amazingly frightening: An article entitled "Prayers paying off for school: Christian campus going strong" from the OC Register in 1990. It's an article about Christian high schools, specifically Calvery Chapel in Costa Mesa, CA. From the article:

Junior Julie Punt, a 15-year-old junior with frizzy blond hair surrounding her face like a halo, said many Calvary students have reason to be confident -- especially when compared with non-Christians. "We know that we're going to heaven and they're not," she said with a smile. "They're going to hell. So we can be happy."

Williams describes the theory of evolution, but tells students that there is no evidence to back it up. Fossil evidence is dismissed as flimsy, carbon-dating techniques are passed off as speculative, and the idea that species change over time is considered obvious fiction.

I had a lot of friends at this school, and it's a wonder they got out of there with any brains in their head.

Vegas Update! I'm back

Vegas Update!

I'm back from Vegas. Among the highlights:

  • I came back with $100 more than I left with. This is good in itself, but better when you realize I bought meals, other food, gas, paid for entertainment and purchased other assorted things.
  • We stayed at the Las Vegas Hilton for free, thanks for my prior gambling there. The LV Hilton has the Star Trek Expirience, a must for geeks like me.
  • On the car ride home, we passed a car with plates reading "TIGR 2". The driver of the car was Tigar Woods.
  • At one point (4:30 AM Thursday), I was the only person playing at any of the tables at the Hilton. I've never seen anything like it.
  • No "Black in Action", though I made several $50 bets, winning most. I also, on a hot streak, managed to tip the house $50 in 30 minutes.

Yikes. At 8 AM I watched Card Sharks, hosted by Jim Perry. Then Card Sharks came on again at 8:30, with host Bob Eubanks. I started turning around the stations, and my local channel 9 has a new version of ....Card Sharks! This one has some guy named Pat Bullard, but the contestants share a row of 7 cards instead of 5, and instead of guessing percentages from surveys, they watch video clips of people in public, and guess if the people will do something or get a question right. In the span of five minutes I saw Card Sharks with three different hosts (missing out only on Bill Rafferty, who hosted only one year), spanning 18 years of television. My day is now complete.

Wayne Newton has decided to accept the position as head of the United Service Organizations' celebrity tour. That's all fine and good, but this Onion article makes good points about the older generation and how well they'd relate to troops today. I saw Newton in Las Vegas in March 2000 - he's a great performer, but my table was the only one in the house with an average age under 65.

It's now after Halloween. I'm not ready for it to be Christmas yet (Christmas celebration and merriment begins after Thanksgiving, as far as my tradition goes), though I've been seeing Xmas displays at malls for the last few weeks. Understandable, it's their biggest money making season, but I love the season, and don't want to become sick of it.

I am ready, however, for it to be fall. The evenings are getting cooler (as are the days, but Fall is defined by late evening, just as Summer is defined by the mid afternoon, Spring by the early morning, and Winter by the night). I miss fall evenings in Santa Cruz, where it got noticeably cooler and the walks through the forest were better than a walk through Fountain Valley. Alas, I'm here and it's home, and fall will be nice, as it usually is.
